The art of Titia Ballot, a ninth generation descendant of French Huguenot refugees, is inspired by the rich diversity of South African cultures and beliefs. In Genesis IV and VI, the story of creation as told in the holy books of Christianity, Islam and Judaism, she highlights the aspirations to a shared heritage and reconciliation. This former head of the Fine Arts Department at North-West University in Potchefstroom has presented 29 solo exhibitions to date, five of which took place in Europe and included two retrospectives. In 2008 she received a Medal of Honour for Visual Arts from the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns. Her work is represented in various private and public collections in South Africa and abroad. She lives in Hermanus, a village near Cape Town.
